Christmas can be a magical time of year filled with hope and joy. For the children that we meet, it is often shadowed by sadness either because someone special has died or it will be their last Christmas with their loved one. Christmas can therefore be a very difficult time of year for many. We thought it might be helpful to share some creative & fun ideas to help us remember our special person this Christmas:-
Make a special Christmas decoration – Cut out a Christmas shape out of colourful card (stars, Christmas Trees & hearts are among the most popular) & inside or on the back you can write a message to your special person / draw a picture of them / write down a favourite memory. If you don’t want to share your message with anyone else all you need to do is cut two shapes the same and stick them together. Once you have written your message you can get busy decorating the outside of your decoration & then hang it up on your Christmas tree with some coloured ribbon!
Create a memory paper chain – this is a really lovely activity to do with the whole family. Each person writes a memory they have of their special person on a paper chain … the more memories the better! Once all the strips of paper have memories on you can share them with each other, maybe you might even learn something new about your special person from one of somebody else’s memories. When Christmas is over the memories can be kept in a memory box & put up the following Christmas.
For some children and young people being together with other members of their family is important so that they can share the sadness and joy of the season. At Jeremiah’s Journey we hold Christmas events where the children and young people can come together and know they are not alone in their grief. Of course we also do our best (with a little help) to ensure that they have some fun.
Wishing you a peaceful & relaxing Christmas and New Year!
